This course explores how zoning codes can meet a local community's future needs and desires to reach more positive social and economic outcomes and responsive land use policies. Participants will examine methods of assessing existing code and development patterns and analyze revisions to aspects of the code, including clarity and consistency, density, affordability, transportation, and equity. Handouts will include, Zoning Ordinance Assessment: Building a Better Code.
 

Learner Outcomes

 Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe zoning’s significance in shaping communities.
  2. Identify reasons for amending local zoning code and expectations of a contemporary zoning ordinance.
  3. Provide various methods for assessing existing code and development patterns.
  4. Evaluate best practices in zoning reform.
