2164 | The Visual Storytellers Lab: Photojournalism
Beyond the Snapshot: Tell the Stories That Matter.
Do you see the world in frames? Are you passionate about capturing moments, uncovering truths, and sharing compelling narratives? The Visual Storytellers Lab is a dynamic summer intensive for aspiring photographers and journalists (ages 13-17) who want to use their lens to make an impact.
Hosted at the University of Georgia, this isn't just a photography class—it's an immersive experience in the powerful craft of photojournalism. You’ll learn how to transform compelling images into powerful stories, guided by professional photojournalists.
What You'll Do:
From day one, you'll embark on a journey of discovery, mastering the technical skills of photography while developing the critical eye of a journalist. You will:
- Master Your Camera: Go beyond auto mode. Learn manual settings, composition, lighting, and advanced photographic techniques to capture impactful images in any situation.
- Find Your Story: Develop an understanding of journalistic ethics, visual narrative, and how to identify compelling subjects and angles in your community.
- Report & Document: Learn interview techniques, how to gather information, and the art of crafting captions and text that elevate your images into powerful visual essays.
- Build a Portfolio: Through a series of real-world assignments, you'll create a body of work—from individual striking images to multi-photo narratives—ready to showcase your talent.
- Edit & Curate: Understand the post-production workflow, using industry-standard software to enhance your images and present your stories effectively.
This lab culminates in a final exhibition or publication of your photojournalism project, where your images will speak volumes.
If you're ready to see the world with a deeper purpose and use your camera to make a difference, your story starts here.
