2160 | City Shapers: A Design & Planning Intensive
Why does your world look the way it does? And how will you shape its future?
Ever wonder who decided where to put that park, why your school looks the way it does, or how a project like the Atlanta BeltLine completely transforms a city?
The City Shapers: A Design & Planning Intensive is a pre-college intensive for aspiring designers, architects, and thinkers (ages 13-17) who want to decode the world around them. We’ll explore the "built environment"—everywhere that humans have designed—from the house next door to massive city-wide infrastructure.
Explore the Big Picture...
We'll investigate how the places we love (and even the ones we don't) come to be. You'll learn from professional architects, landscape architects, and urban planners as we analyze real-world interventions, including:
- Mega-Projects: Like Boston's "Big Dig" and the Atlanta BeltLine.
- Cultural Spaces: Such as memorials, museums, and parks.
- Everyday Design: The residential projects that shape our daily lives.
...Then Design Your Own.
This program culminates in a hands-on studio project where you become the creative practitioner. You will choose a focus based on your passion:
- Studio A: The Architecture Track
- Do you love focusing on beauty and function at the human scale? This studio is for you. You'll dive into a specific architectural design challenge, envisioning a new future for a single building or space.
- Studio B: The Urban Design Track
- Are you more interested in the bigger picture? This studio explores the large-scale systems, policies, and infrastructure that shape entire communities. You'll tackle a challenge at the neighborhood or city level.
Join us this summer and gain the vision to see your world in a new way—and the skills to start changing it.
