Growth in a county can occur in a variety of forms. Given that each county is unique, growth will impact each county and its quality of life differently. While specific attributes of a county’s quality of life differ greatly, there are key elements that can help commissioners understand growth trends and strategies for managing growth. This course will offer participants an opportunity to examine those elements as well as the various reasons and circumstances growth exists. Because growth is often anticipated, commissioners should understand their policy-setting roles and how these policies manage growth and ultimately impact the quality of life for citizens. The policies made at the county level affect many other entities such as the local school system, local cities, and neighboring counties.  Part of the Economic and Community Development Specialty Track, this course will help prepare commissioners for making decisions and maintaining or increasing the quality of life in their community. Other courses in this specialty track are Community Revitalization, Global Commerce and Georgia’s Targeted Industries, Land Use and Planning, Regional Economic Development, Tax Incentive and Financing for Economic Development, Understanding Local Economic Development Assets, and Work Force Development and Education.
