Regardless of a county’s size and whether it is rural, suburban or urban, commissioners have a responsibility to protect resources, assets and revenues.  As policy makers, fiscal stewards and local leaders, county commissioners can preserve the character of their community and provide more cost effective and efficient service delivery through creating and using a land use plan.  Current research shows that communities that follow a land use plan create and sustain more jobs, use resources more efficiently and deliver more cost effective services.  This advanced course will focus on understanding the value of land use planning, the legal authority to make land use decisions, and how best to implement a land use plan including case studies on best practices. This course is offered as part of the Economic and Community Development specialty track. The other courses in this track are: Managing Growth; Revitalizing Your Community; Global Commerce and Georgia’s Targeted Industries; Using Incentives for Economic Development; Understanding Local Economic Development Assets; Workforce Development; and Regional Economic Development Training.
