Strategic planning is a disciplined effort to determine where you are, where you need or want to be, and how to get there. The purpose of strategic planning for counties is threefold: first, to exercise as much discretion as they can in the areas under their control to ensure responsiveness to citizens and stakeholders; second, to develop good strategies to deal with changed and changing circumstances; and third, to develop a coherent and defensible basis for decision making. In this class participants will explore the dynamics of planning using an interactive exercise, learn key components and processes of strategic planning, work with colleagues to design a simulated strategic process, and explore their strategic leadership roles as conveners, champions, and catalysts.
