What is your county’s vision for creating a healthy community where citizens live, work, learn, and play? While health and wellness are usually considered a personal choice, there is an undeniable link between healthy citizens and the economic well-being of a community. With this link comes an important role that county commissions can take to promote health and wellness. This specialty track course will guide participants through the obvious and not-so-obvious financial, economic and social benefits of developing policies that will promote a healthy county by first examining how Georgia and the country defines healthy.  Participants will review their own county’s health data, examine existing programs in their counties, learn about successful low cost initiatives in Georgia, and create a plan to develop partnerships.  It is recommended that course participants have a solid understanding of county health insurance as offered in the County Insurance and Risk Management course.  Health and Wellness is part of the Quality of Life/Social Issues specialty track. Other courses in this track include: Public Health; Parks, Recreation, and Active Living; Complex Community Issues; Identifying Funding for Community Enhancement; Demographics and Diversity: Their Impact on Governing; Arts, Culture and Tourism; and Sustainability.
