“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”  While sustainability means many different things to many people, this famous Greek proverb sums up the essence of what it means to build sustainable communities best, as it emphasizes the importance of investing today in meeting the needs of tomorrow so that the community will thrive for generations to come.  From addressing past problems to meeting immediate needs to planning for long-term goals, however, county commissioners face many challenges to building sustainable communities.  In this advanced specialty track course, participants will better understand what sustainability can mean for community development; how addressing legacy environmental problems (such as brownfields) can spur economic development; how investing in parks and recreation supports economic development, promotes health, and preserves valuable natural resources; and how “green” approaches to community infrastructure can save money while also improving quality of life.   During the six-hour session, participants will learn to how identify sustainable opportunities that serve multiple community goals; how using natural and other resources wisely provides opportunities to save money; and how to develop a vision for the future that connects the past and present and strives to balance competing issues and interests.   This course is offered as part of the Quality of Life/Social Issues specialty track. The other courses in this track are: Demographics and Diverse Perspectives; Arts, Culture and Tourism; Addressing Complex Community Issues; Health and Wellness; Funding Community Enhancements; Parks, Recreation and Active Living; and Public Health.
